Fountains Abbey is the inspiration for marble and bronze sculptures

-

WORKS OF art by sculptor Joseph Hayton have gone on show in North Yorkshire.

The marble and bronze works are displayed at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden as part of the Dissolution exhibition. They include 11 sculptures and four drawings.

The art incorporates human figures and the drapery habits of the monks.

A National Trust spokesman said: “Inspired by the ruins of Fountains Abbey, Joseph Hayton delves into the history, culture and texture of ‘Nidderdale Marble’ in this exhibition on display in Fountains Mill.”

Mr Hayton is a sculptor who is based at the King Street workshops in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire.

He said: “I have had a few people commenting on the work. They seem to like that it was inspired by the architecture and the people.

“I will be holding a workshop on October 26, 27 and 28 where I will be carving and allowing visitors to do their own carving, too. I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s me giving something back to the National Trust for giving me the space to show my work.”

A lifelong passion for art and sculpture together with his practical nature led to Mr Hayton taking up an apprenticeship in stone masonry.

He trained at York College and worked as a stone mason for several years and became experienced in many aspects of the craft.

Human form and in particular the head inspire his work. He creates unique figurative pieces as well as portrait sculpture in both stone and bronze.

He also produces bespoke stonework including the design, creation and installation of stone fireplaces and all other ornate stone work.
