Second suspect sought by FBI in connection with deadly US attack
A SECOND person is wanted for questioning over the New York City cycle path truck attack, the FBI has announced, as an Uzbek immigrant was formally charged in connection with the act of terror in which eight people were killed.
Sayfullo Saipov, 29, has been charged with providing material support to a terrorist group and violence and destruction of motor vehicles following the deadliest terror attack to strike New York City since September 11, 2001.
It has emerged that Saipov had entered the US legally in 2010 through a visa lottery programme, prompting US president Donald Trump to demand tougher immigration measures based on “merit”.
Mr Trump, who spoke to Prime Minister Theresa May on the phone about the attack, has not ruled out the attacker being sent to Guantanamo Bay, the president’s press secretary said.
The authorities said Saipov watched Islamic State videos on his mobile phone and picked Halloween for the attack because he knew more people would be out on the streets.
Afterwards, as he lay injured in hospital, he asked to display the IS flag in his room and “stated that he felt good about what he had done,” prosecutors said in court papers.
As detectives turned their attention to hunting a suspected accomplice, world leaders offered condolences to the families of the victims.
Five Argentinians have been named among the victims of Tuesday’s attack which also left at least 12 people injured.
