First Minister ‘acted by the book’ over Sargeant claims

-

SIR ELTON John has said he originally thought his hit song was unlikely to be a success.

The pop star admitted being “terrible” at knowing which of his tracks would be hits and said he did not want to include the popular ballad on his 1974 album

Sir Elton made the revelation in his new TV special, .He said, of predicting his own hits: “I’m terrible at it.

“One of them was

And I remember writing it in the morning and my drummer Nigel Olsson – we were sharing a cabin, he was asleep – and I was downstairs writing, which must have annoyed him. When we finished recording it I said to Gus Dudgeon my producer, ‘I don’t think that’s a hit, I don’t want it on the album, even’. And he said ‘you’re crazy’.” WELSH FIRST Minister Carwyn Jones has said he acted “by the book” and had “no alternative” but to take the action he did over allegations of inappropriate behaviour against former assembly member Carl Sargeant who was found dead on Tuesday.

Mr Jones faced calls to quit after Mr Sargeant’s family claimed the former Welsh government Minister had been denied “natural justice” because he was unaware of the detailed nature of the allegations against him.

Mr Sargeant, 49, is understood to have taken his own life four days after being sacked from his role as Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children and suspended from the Labour Party. Speaking at the Welsh Government offices in Cathays Park, Cardiff, Mr Jones became emotional as he paid tribute to his “friend”, who he described as “a person of great warmth”.

“These are the darkest days any of us can remember in this institution, but they are darkest of all for the family,” he said.

Leighton Andrews, a Labour former Minister in the Welsh Government, said there was “immense anger” at what had happened to Mr Sargeant. He criticised Mr Jones for commenting publicly on the allegations against Mr Sargeant after he had referred the matter to the Labour Party.
