98 object to plans for McDonald’s in town

-

RESIDENTS ARE split over plans for a new McDonald’s drivethrough on the outskirts of upmarket Beverley.

Nearly 100 people have written to object to East Riding Council – but another 35 have come out in support, one of whom accused naysayers of “acting like snobs”.

The fast food giant wants to build a restaurant and drivethrough on land at Morrison’s, in Wingfield Way, together with car parking and a play area.

The council has received 98 letters raising concerns including that it will encourage local schoolchildren to eat unhealthy food, create litter and increase traffic.

However, there have been 35 letters of support. One said students could also buy unhealthy food at the supermarket and the McDonald’s “will make no change to their eating habits”.

Another said it had been “a long time coming” and objectors “don’t have to use the restaurant”.

East Riding Council is recommending approval of the plans at a meeting next week, saying it would create up to 30 full-time and 35 part-time jobs and “provide wider restaurant choice”.

A report stated: “It is recognised that a lot of local objections have been received in relation to the potential adverse impacts of the scheme and there could be some impact on the health of the community, increased traffic, anti-social behaviour etc; however these issues have to be balanced against the benefits of the scheme.”
