Broady still in with chance of qualifying

Naomi Broady battled through to the second round of qualifying at the Australian Open, but there were defeats for Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter.

Broady, the seventh seed, dropped the second set to Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenst­ein, but recovered to win 7-6 (7/4) 5-7 6-3 in hot conditions in Melbourne.

Norrie, the sixth seed in men’s qualifying, was well beaten 6-4 6-2 by Australian John-Patrick Smith, his defeat leaving Kyle Edmund as the only British player in the main men’s draw.

British No 4 Boulter retired with a leg problem when down 6-4 6-7 (1/7) 5-2 to Kayla Day.
