Plans for 300 homes on 30 acres of grassland look set for approval

-

OFFICIALS ARE recommending approval of plans to build 300 houses on more than 30 acres of grassland on the outskirts of Howden.

Half the homes in the Bellway Homes scheme would have fourbedrooms, while a quarter would be “affordable”. The plan is to build the estate in two stages with a link road on to Selby Road.

But the plans, which are due to go before East Riding Council’s planning committee, have sparked criticism from the town council for being “poorly designed” and “not in keeping with the architectural design of houses” in the historic market town. Nearly 50 residents have also submitted objections, echoing concerns about the design and the “conflict with the character of the area”.

There are also fears doctors, dentists and schools will not be able to cope with the extra people.

Network Rail has also weighed in, saying the council has to recognise the cumulative impact of developments planned in the area, including the impact on car parking at the station, which is often full. They are asking for a contribution towards extending the car park and improving cycle facilities.

Planners say there are enough secondary school places, but admit there is a shortfall of 67 primary school places.

They are recommending approval of the plans at a meeting next Thursday, subject to the signing of legal agreements including towards education and public transport.
