MP to press Grayling for £50m improvements to ‘nightmare’ junction

-

BEVERLEY AND Holderness MP Graham Stuart is to meet with Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to press the case for a £50m revamp of the busiest junction in the East Riding.

The Jock’s Lodge junction near Beverley, where the A164 and A1079 meet, was described as a “nightmare” by the MP.

The A164, which serves the south of the East Riding of Yorkshire, west Hull and Beverley, has the highest volume of traffic in East Riding, with some sections carrying more than 30,000 vehicles a day.

East Riding Council submitted its outline business case for the improvements to the Department for Transport last December. It is bidding for £40m, with the rest to come from the council’s capital programme.

Mr Stuart said: “There are long queues at the best of times and at the worst of times there have been horrific accidents and loss of life. I want to see massive improvements at this intersection where the A164 and A1079 meet, and it’s a top priority for me to see this happen.”

Mr Stuart said he would be doing all he could to help between now and May when the Government is likely to make its decision.

If the bid for funding is successful, work could start in 2020 and continue for up to two years.

Councillor Kerri Harold said “Jock’s Lodge is the worst junction entering or leaving Beverley, and the road signs are misleading.

“We need the upgrade to the junction to move the town’s economy forward.

“I fully support our MP’s campaign to bring improvement to our roads, which will help bring investment and tourists to our area.”
