IT MAY prove to be one of the biggest coups on Yorkshire’s music scene since Bruce Springsteen performed in Leeds five years ago.

And the impending arrival of pop superstar Britney Spears in Scarborough to play a concert at the seaside town’s 6,500-capacity Open Air Theatre was always going to be a hugely sought-after ticket.

But fans of the American singer yesterday voiced their frustration that they could not buy tickets to her UK tour after the website crashed as they went on sale.

Spears will return to the UK in the summer for a total of six live shows, including the Scarborough gig on August 17, as part of her Britney: Piece Of Me tour.

Fans with access to pre-sale tickets flooded the LiveNation website at 9am yesterday, but were left disappointed when the site crashed.

One wrote on Twitter: “Devastated that the @LiveNationUK website crashed while I was trying to get @britneyspears tickets... Whyyyy.”

Another fan wrote: “First webpage crashed, now no tickets left, you just killed me.”

Spears announced this week that she is set to undertake a limited tour of the Piece Of Me show, which has dazzled Las Vegas during a four-year residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and was responsible for a million tickets being sold.

The 36-year-old singer, whose breakthrough hit ...Baby One

More Time was released in 1998 while she was still a teenager leading to a career which has seen eight top-ten albums in the UK, will tour in Europe and on the East Coast of the USA.

Along with the date at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre, Spears will appear at Brighton Pride on August 4 and then play the Manchester Arena on August 18, the 3Arena in Dublin on August 20, the SEE Hydro in Glasgow on August 22 and London’s O2 Arena on August 24.

Her gig in Scarborough is set to rival the hype surrounding the appearance of Springsteen at the

First Direct Arena in Leeds – the first concert to be staged at the West Yorkshire venue when it opened in 2013.

The Yorkshire Post revealed yesterday that Peter Taylor, the promoter who signed the deal to bring Spears to Scarborough, sold the Open Air Theatre to her agents as Yorkshire’s answer to the Hollywood Bowl. General ticket sales for the

Britney: Piece Of Me tour will begin at 10am today.

No one was available from Live Nation yesterday for comment about the booking problems.
