Delays alert as work begins on A64
MOTORISTS TRAVELLING through North Yorkshire face months of delays while work takes place on one of the region’s busiest routes.
Highways England yesterday announced work will get under way on Monday on the £3.6m project to improve a 10-mile stretch of the A64 in York.
The project, which is expected to be completed in the summer, will see part of the central reservation barriers replaced, new timber fences and upgraded footpath crossing points.
But the road will have a 40mph speed restriction during the work, from the junction with the A1(M) to Askham Bar, and average speed cameras will be in place.
The majority of work will take place overnight, between 8pm and 6am, avoiding weekends, and two standard-width lanes should remain open in each direction during the day.
Chris Dunn, Highways England project manager, said: “By replacing 10 miles of safety barrier we will be improving safety for the thousands of drivers who use this stretch of the A64 every day. The work will be carried out in 2.5-mile stretches to minimise disruption for drivers. As part of this work we will also be closing the vehicle crossing point in the central reservation at Headley Bar, along with several other pedestrian crossing points which are being closed on safety grounds.”
Road signs in the central reservation will also be replaced, and contractors will carry out routine maintenance during the work, Highways England added.
