Eriksen’s free-kick gives Spurs draw in Turin after early Juve salvo

-

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN earned Tottenham Hotspur a fantastic draw as they rallied from two down to finish 2-2 with Juventus in the Champions League last 16 first leg.

Spurs will take two precious away goals into the second leg at Wembley next month after Harry Kane’s clinical finish and a clever free-kick from the superb Eriksen ensured a fascinating contest finished tied in Turin. Mauricio Pochettino’s men appeared on the brink after Gonzalo Higuain put Juventus two up within nine minutes, the second a penalty after Ben Davies fouled Federico Bernardeschi.

But Kane pulled one back, only Juve’s second goal conceded in 17 games, before Higuain missed a second penalty, in what could prove a decisive moment in this tie.

Juve surrendered all momentum after their blistering start and Spurs will now be targeting a first Champions League quarter-final since 2011.

Pochettino said: “I think we started too sloppy and conceded two goals in nine minutes, but the character we showed was fantastic.

“I think we deserved the victory more than the draw.”

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City put one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals with an emphatic 4-0 win over Basel.

In-form Sergio Aguero scored his 198th City goal and Bernardo Silva also got on the scoresheet as Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to victory on a freezing night at St Jakob-Park.

Most of the damage was done as City rattled in three goals in a blistering nine-minute spell early in the first half, dashing Basel’s hopes of causing an upset after making a bright start.

Gundogan struck a sublime second after the break but the Premier League leaders were cruising by then, having eased off to conserve energy in their continuing quadruple quest.

Kevin De Bruyne was removed from the match early and City manager Pep Guardiola also eased Leroy Sane back into action as a second-half substitute following his rapid recovery from an ankle injury.

Midfielder Emre Can is suspended for Liverpool’s Champions League last-16 first leg tie in Porto tonight.

Defender Joe Gomez has travelled with the squad after missing the last two matches with a knee injury while record signing Virgil van Dijk is set for his first appearance in the competition for the club he joined in January.

Loris Karius keeps his place with manager Jurgen Klopp abandoning his group stage policy of rotating his goalkeepers from Premier League to European games.
