Support to help power plant staff find jobs
MEASURES ARE being taken by authorities in North Yorkshire to support individuals facing redundancy with the upcoming closure of Eggborough Power Station.
It was announced at the start of February that the coal-fired power station is to close in 2018 after failing to secure a contract for coming years.
Without such a contract, the power station had said, it will “cease to be economically viable”.
Now authorities in North Yorkshire, including Selby District Council, Selby Job Centre Plus and York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership have been working together with the power station to support those affected by its closure.
A jobs fair is to be held on March 7 to help staff facing redundancy find alternative employment, while further training opportunities are also to be offered.
Leader of Selby District Council, Coun Mark Crane, said: “We’ve been working closely with Eggborough Power Station to help those at risk of redundancy.
“The power station has a skilled workforce so it’s important that the council and others do all we can to help people where possible find similar job opportunities.”
Numbers of potential redundancies and associated timing are subject to consultation with staff representatives, the company has previously said, but there may be a number of jobs to support decommissioning, demolition and future business opportunities beyond September.
