Share your story for museum’s anniversary
PEOPLE ARE being asked to share their experiences of one of the world’s oldest museums for a book on its history.
It will tell the story of Scarborough’s Rotunda Museum, which has welcomed visitors from around the world since opening in 1829.
The book has been commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of William Smith, a pioneering geologist who was involved with designing the museum.
Jennifer Dunne, collections manager at Scarborough Museums Trust, said: “It’s extremely rewarding to be involved in such a momentous project, documenting and preserving the history of the iconic Rotunda Museum. The museum and its awe-inspiring collections have been a part of the Scarborough landscape for 189 years and it has welcomed many famous visitors.
“We’re looking forward to receiving some fascinating stories, memories and anecdotes from our visitors.”
The book is being written by Dr Stuart Davies, of the University of Lincoln, using documents from Scarborough’s libraries and archives and people’s personal recollections of visits to the museum.
Dr Davies said: “The reminiscences of people who used the museum or worked there can make a genuine and exciting contribution to the story.”
