Coastguard warning to public over waves risk
RESCUE TEAMS on the Yorkshire coast have warned members of the public to pay attention to road closures after they were called out to “wave-dodgers”.
Scarborough and Burniston Coastguard said members “once again” had to give safety cover in Scarborough’s North Bay, due to people wave-dodging on Royal Albert Drive.
This was despite a road closure being in place between Peasholm roundabout and Chain Hill.
A spokesman for the team said: “Advice was given to several members of the public about this particularly dangerous activity.
“A large amount of debris was washed ashore due to large waves around the time of high tide. A large tree branch was thrown onto the road and almost hit a child.”
The Coastguard has now issued a warning, urging people to stay clear of waves which are overtopping the sea walls, and not to drive vehicles past road closure signs.
It comes just days after coastguard teams were called out to members of the public wavedodging near the town’s historic Spa, which saw a family assisted to safety.
The spokesman added: “It is particularly disappointing to see parents allowing and even encouraging children to play in the danger zone.
“We shall continue to help people when they put themselves in danger and give them advice afterwards.”
