Fine spell but beware of thundery showers

-

TEMPERATURES COULD hit 21C in Yorkshire and the Humber today, continuing a fine spell of weather across the region.

The Met Office is expecting dry and “often sunny” conditions across the county – but thundery showers are due to develop during the late afternoon, evening and overnight.

It comes after Thursday was the hottest April day for nearly 70 years in the UK, with the mercury soaring to 29.1C in St James’s Park in London.

Most parts of the country also enjoyed warmer conditions than normal for the time of year yesterday, including Bridlington, where highs of 20C were reported. Forecasters have said the hot weather is a result of warm air moving up from the Azores in the south.

The Met Office said that the weather today in Yorkshire would be “dry and often sunny, and feeling warm inland”, and Sheffield was forecast to be as hot as 21C, while the maximum temperature for most of the region is due to be 20C.

“Thundery showers will develop during the late afternoon, evening and overnight. Onshore winds may lead to cooler, mistier coastal conditions. Periods of showery rain and some sunny intervals are forecast on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Showers may be locally heavy. Feeling cooler with sometimes brisk winds.”

The London Marathon tomorrow is forecast to be the hottest yet, with a high of 23C possible, which would beat the 1996 record of 22.7C. Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “It’s going to be very hot and humid, and very close to, if not breaking the record.”

Race organisers are adding more water, ice and shower stations along the 26.2-mile route. Regular runners are being advised to consider dropping their goal times and to run more slowly. Comment: Page 18.
