10-man Guiseley defeat Torquay

-

Relegated Guiseley made the long trip to fellow demoted side Torquay United and won a National League thriller 4-3.

A dramatic opening 10 minutes saw Guiseley have Harry Flowers dismissed after pulling back Elliott Romain, and Joe Green make a smart save to deny Romain’s penalty attempt.

The Lions then went up the other end where Curtis Morrison found Dayle Southwell, who provided a decisive touch to make it 1-0.

Rhys Healy levelled for the hosts, but soon after Lions midfielder Will Hatfield took full advantage of miscommunication between the two Torquay centre-backs to score.

The second half had an even start, but the Lions were able to make it 3-1 when John Rooney crossed for Rowan Liburd, who was well placed to loop in a header.

Torquay got one back when Healey headed in his second.

They pushed players forward and Guiseley were able to break on the counter and Liburd got his second goal of the game.

Time was running out, but Healey managed to complete his hat-trick with a header.

Guiseley, though, left with a victory – only their seventh of a fraught season – and go into the last day of the campaign knowing they can move off the bottom of the table with a win or a draw and rivals Chester lose by five or more goals.
