Hunt poised to meet bereaved parents

-

HEALTH SECRETARY Jeremy Hunt is to meet bereaved parents in Hull seeking answers over what happened to their babies’ ashes.

In February Mr Hunt rejected calls for an independent inquiry into the controversy, saying the city council’s resources were “most usefully focussed on further improving cremation practice.”

Mr Hunt will meet Tina Trowhill, whose baby’s ashes were scattered in 1994 without her knowledge, and heads Hull Action for Ashes, and other parents, in Westminster in July.

Mrs Trowhill, who felt a council review last year did not go far enough, said meeting the Health Secretary would be a “major boost”. She said an inquiry “similar to that held in Shrewsbury, which cost only £50,000, will “assist in building confidence that everything is being done to ensure that lessons have been learnt and that the same mistakes will not be made in future”.
