-

Yorkshire’s Bailey Gill and David Hague have been named among England’s eightstrong team to play France in an international later this month, writes Chris Stratford.

Lindrick’s Gill and Hague (Malton & Norton) will play alongside Todd Clements (Braintree, Essex) Ben Jones (Northamptonshire County), Matthew Jordan (Royal Liverpool ), Billy McKenzie (Rowlands Castle, Hampshire), Gian-Marco Petrozzi (Trentham, Staffordshire) and Andrew Wilson (Darlington, Durham).

The biennial match will be played at Vidauban Golf Club, near Nice, on May 12-13.

It was first played in 1934 and England have won 29 times, conceding just five matches. The French team was last successful in 2010 in Chantilly.

The England team will head to France brimming with confidence.

Hague, Clements, Jordan and Petrozzi recently won the European Nations Championship by 20 shots in Spain. Clements, the English amateur champion, also won the individual title.

McKenzie and Petrozzi have won the Spanish amateur and the New South Wales amateur respectively this year while Gill and Jones were joint runners-up in the Portuguese amateur.

Last season Jordan played in the GB&I Walker Cup team and won the St Andrew’s Links Trophy, while Hague won the North of England amateur and the Lagonda Trophy. Wilson won the Lee Westwood Trophy and was runner-up in the North of England behind Hague.
