Sun-seekers ‘destroying’ beauty spots with litter
SUN-SEEKERS HAVE been accused of “destroying” Britain’s beauty spots after parks and beaches were left piled with litter over the bank holiday.
Thousands took advantage of record temperatures during the early May break with a trip to their nearest green space or coastal attraction.
But the traditional accompaniments of a day in the sun – drinks bottles and food wrappers – fast became a blot on the scenery when they were dumped in vast volume at some sites. Images posted on social media showed bins overflowing with refuse at locations ranging from the beaches of Wales to the parks of Camberwell.
Campaign group Keep Britain Tidy called on visitors to take their detritus with them if bins reach capacity.
Chief executive Allison OgdenNewton said: “On a gorgeous bank holiday thousands of us flock to our beaches and parks because they are beautiful, clean and great places to enjoy the sunshine with our families.
“But some people seem to think it is acceptable to walk away at the end of the day, leaving their rubbish behind and destroying the very beauty they went there to enjoy.
“It is not, neither can we use the excuse that ‘the bins were full’. If the bins are full, then you should take your rubbish home with you. You took it there, you take it away again. Those thoughtless people who leave their litter are damaging our environment for everyone.”
The Campaign to Protect Rural England, which said “disgusting and unnecessary” waste posed a risk to wildlife.
One angry resident from south London called on Lambeth Council to take the litter situation in hand after finding Ruskin Park strewn with debris.
From today, it will be “nowhere near as warm” as the bank holiday temperatures, with temperatures struggling to hit 20C and most likely resting in the mid-teens.
