Charlie Tanfield’s rise from amateur upstart to world and Commonwealth individual pursuit champion has earned the Great Ayton cyclist, 21, a place on Great Britain’s podium programme, British Cycling has announced.

“I’m delighted to find out I’ve been selected onto the Great Britain Cycling Team. It’s great to see that all the hard work has paid off,” Tanfield said.

“I have some very high ambitions which I want to achieve during my cycling career, and the Great Britain Cycling Team men’s endurance programme fills me with confidence that I’m in the right place.

“Racing, living and training with the KGF boys has been absolutely great and I enjoyed every minute of it, even the 7am training sessions.

Tanfield races on the road for Canyon-Eisberg alongside his brother and fellow Team KGF member Harry, who won stage one of the Tour de Yorkshire earlier this month.

Simon Yates retained the overall lead in the Giro d’Italia as Elia Viviani claimed his fourth stage win of the race.

Quick-Step Floors’ Viviani won the 155km stage 17 from Riva del Garda to Iseo in a damp sprint finish, with Ireland’s Sam Bennett of Bora-Hansgrohe forced to settle for second place after finding himself briefly boxed out on the final straight.

There was no change at the top of the general classification, in which Mitchelton-Scott’s Yates leads by 56 seconds from defending champion Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb.

Italian Domenico Pozzovivo of Bahrain-Merida is third, three minutes and 11 seconds down, with Team Sky’s Chris Froome in fourth place.
