More disruption as roads closed for water main repairs

-

COMMUTERS IN Leeds face a second day of disruption today as emergency work is carried out on a broken water main beneath one of the city’s busiest roads.

A section of the A660 Otley Road in Headingley was closed off to traffic yesterday morning after the carriageway was damaged.

Police and council teams worked to put a diversion in place, while Yorkshire Water engineers made an assessment and began repairs.

Leeds City Council had initially warned drivers that the road was expected to be shut for the rest of the day and urged them to avoid the area, but it later emerged that a second day of works was likely to be necessary.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said yesterday: “We were made aware of a burst on Otley Road in Headingley early this morning with a team immediately dispatched to the scene.

“For health and safety reasons we have had to close parts of Headingley Lane with traffic diverted from Victoria Road round to Cardigan Lane, rejoining at the Wood Lane junction.

“We are working as quickly as possible to fix the leak and reopen the road; however, due to the severity of the burst it is likely to be closed for the next two days.”

Bus services 1, 6, 28, 97, X84 and X85 will be diverting between Hyde Park Corner and Headingley Centre via Victoria Road, Cardigan Road and North Lane in both directions until the work has been completed.
