Town hall windows will cost £145,000

-

LEEDS CITY Council is set to spend £145,000 replacing windows in Pudsey Town Hall.

Campaigners say this is a show of commitment from the authority, and will help Pudsey “keep its identity”.

The council had agreed to replace the windows earlier this week before awarding a contract to carry out the work.

More than 140 new windows on three sides of the building are set to be fitted.

A council report said: “The replacement has been required for a number of years but has never progressed due to considerations being made regarding the building’s future.

“There have been major issues with the windows now for a number of years, with several costly repairs carried out. Constant staff issues are raised especially during the winter months.”

Pudsey councillor Simon Seary, who says he has campaigned for the council to keep the town hall, said: “I’m really pleased that we are investing in the town hall – it’s been part of our heritage for a long time.”

Referring to recent council plans to sell off Otley Civic Centre, he added: “We would have hated for it to be sold off and turned into flats – a similar thing happened in Otley and that was always in the back of our minds.

“But this is a commitment – it helps the town keep its identity.”

The work is expected to start next month and will last until September.
