Call for calm as riots follow police shooting
FRENCH AUTHORITIES have called for calm after clashes between protesters and police in the city of Nantes.
The violence broke out overnight after an officer shot dead a 22-year-old driver who was trying to avoid a police checkpoint early on Tuesday.
Police say an officer shot the man after he had refused to comply with orders and had hit another officer.
Protesters clashed with police, throwing Molotov cocktails and burning cars and rubbish bins.
They also set fire to shops and buildings in three poor neighbourhoods across the city.
An arrest warrant had earlier been issued for the man on suspicion that he was involved in organised robbery, it was reported.
Interior minister Gerard Collomb condemned the violence.
Prosecutors have opened a judicial investigation and police also opened an internal inquiry looking at the officer’s actions and his decision to use a firearm.
Meanwhile French lawmaker Valerie Oppelt yesterday called for calm.
“Nantes was the scene of violence last night. I appeal for calm. An investigation is under way to learn the circumstances of this tragedy,” Oppelt said in a tweet.
“My thoughts go out to the residents of the Breil neighbourhood.”
Police reinforcements are now expected in Nantes to prevent any further violence. The full circumstances are being investigated by police.
