Time limit on parking spaces for disabled

-

TIME RESTRICTIONS are to be imposed on some seafront disabled parking bays following concerns that people have been using them to park permanently.

North Yorkshire County Council is set to introduce a three-hour limit on spaces in Sandside, one of the busiest roads in Scarborough’s South Bay.

It is in response to concerns that people are not leaving the spaces, meaning disabled drivers and those with passengers with Blue Badge permits are unable to find anywhere to park,

However, one parking space will be left exempt from the new restrictions – which would see a maximum stay of three hours – as it is used as a parking space for a resident who is a Blue Badge -older.

A report will go before the county council’s business and environmental services corporate director and executive members meeting on Friday.

It states: “The location of this area along Scarborough’s seafront makes this popular with members of the public and consequently demand for parking is high and in the summer tourist season, is regularly at full capacity.

“Within the designated lay-bys for disabled badge holders only, there are approximately eight spaces for vehicles in total.

“There is currently no time limit on how long a vehicle may park in these disabled bays and surveys have shown that one vehicle, belonging to a resident, can regularly be parked in a particular space for the majority of the time.”

Under the new North Yorkshire County Council proposals, for 24 hours a day, there will be a three-hour maximum stay with no return permitted within one hour.

However, in one space there will only be a restriction from 9am until 6pm so the resident can park their car overnight, as there are no disabled parking spaces near their home in Sandside.
