Wells Farhh Go set for Newmarket

-

The step up to a mile and five furlongs for the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket tomorrow should bring out improvement in Wells Farhh Go, writes Richard Byram.

Connections of the Tim Easterby-trained colt still nurture hopes of going for the St Leger at Doncaster in September and victory will keep the dream alive for a horse, trained at Great Habton, who ran better than his placing suggests at Royal Ascot.

Easterby’s inmate began his career with two wins at York last season and returned to Knavesmire in May, finishing sixth in the Derby trial, the Dante Stakes.

Wells Farhh Go, who also holds an entry for the Great Voltiguer Stakes at York’s Ebor meeting in August, also finished sixth in last month’s King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Martyn Meade’s horse Advertise is fancied to win the Arqana July Stakes at Newmarket later the same day.

Meade’s exciting youngster found only Calyx a length too good in the Coventry Stakes and that horse is bound for the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville next time out.

While a crack at the top level surely awaits Advertise, Meade wants to give the son of Showcasing more experience first.

But Wilamina will skip the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, with trainer Meade hoping to find an easier option.

While Meade admits the filly probably ran the best race of her life last time out at Royal Ascot when third in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes to Aljazzi, the prospect of taking on blistering Coronation Stakes winner Alpha Centauri does not appeal.

“I think it was a career-best at Ascot, but that’s about where we are with her, we are going to have to farm around and look for an easier Group One,” said Meade.

“She is in the Falmouth, but I won’t run her there, she’d have almost no chance in that.

“There might be something in France later on. She does go on softish ground, so I’m working on the basis that I’ll wait until all the others are spent and we might find an easier one.”
