THE FAMOUS produce of Yorkshire was heralded as “second to none” by two Michelin-starred chefs as they launched a campaign yesterday to highlight the region’s food and drink.

Andrew Pern, from the Star at Harome in North Yorkshire, and James Mackenzie, of the Pipe and Glass, near Beverley, were at the Great Yorkshire Show to launch a new guide which has been produced to highlight the best eateries and festivals.

The guide includes entries for farm shops to cookery schools, independent cafes to Michelinstarred restaurants, tea rooms and coffee shops to the region’s leading food and drink festivals.

Mr Pern said: “The food scene in Yorkshire is second to none. It may be known as God’s own county, but to us it’s God’s own pantry, with food literally fit for the gods at every turn.

“The national parks, the vales of York and of course the depths of the North Sea, offer every ingredient needed for eateries of all kinds.”

Mr Mackenzie added: “‘We are so lucky to have such a vast and varied larder throughout the seasons in Yorkshire from fresh fish to great game and of course the pink sticks of Yorkshire forced rhubarb, which we are lucky enough to showcase on our menus at The Pipe and Glass.

“The choice of great quality food and drink establishments and artisan producers just keeps on growing year on year which can only be a good thing to attract more people to come to eat, drink, stay and play in our beautiful county.”

The guide has been produced by the region’s tourism organisation, Welcome to Yorkshire.

Chief executive Sir Gary Verity said: “We are spoiled with the broad variety of fresh local produce in the county and the hugely talented people who turn this into some of the best food and drink in the world.”

Last year, the NFU launched its Pride and Provenance campaign at the Great Yorkshire Show to demonstrate the huge contribution the agri-food sector makes to the region’s economy. The campaign represents 83 companies with a total turnover of £3bn and 25,000 employees.
