Accident victim’s life-savers honoured

-

TWO WOMEN and two Humberside Police officers are to receive national honours following a harrowing roadside life and death battle to save the life of a woman who had been injured in an accident.

Lynda Clayton, 63, was waiting to collect her grandson outside Burstwick Primary School in Burstwick in East Yorkshire last October when she was involved in a collision which resulted in her being trapped between the car and her own vehicle.

Her right leg was severed completely above the knee and her left leg was also severely injured.

Daisy Turner and Victoria Foster, both from Patrington, rushed to help. Mrs Foster used a belt as a make-shift tourniquet to staunch the blood loss from the right leg while Mrs Turner called the emergency services.

Pcs Jim Charlesworth and Tony Sedman were on the scene within minutes and using their first aid equipment applied a proper tourniquet to the shattered left leg.

Doctors at Hull Royal Infirmary’s accident and emergency department said later there was no doubt that the swift first aid the woman received saved her life. Any delay in stemming the blood flow could have resulted in her bleeding to death.

Now the four life-savers have all been awarded Royal Humane Society Certificates of Commendation for their actions.

Andrew Chapman, the secretary of the Royal Humane Society, said: “This was a truly horrific accident. But Victoria and Daisy who were at the scene didn’t hesitate to go forward and do their best. Thanks to the four of them, the victim lived. They richly deserve the awards they are to receive.”
