Hundreds of windows smashed by masked teenagers
A “NIGHT of mindless vandalism” involving masked teenagers left hundreds of windows smashed across Grimsby.
The National Fishing Heritage Centre was one of the worst hit in the rampage, which Humberside Police said targeted cars and businesses at multiple locations.
There are reports that one of the wrecked cars was a car specially modified for use by a disabled person.
Detective Superintendent Jo Roe said: “I want to reassure people living in Grimsby that last night’s incidents were part of a night of mindless vandalism committed by, we think, a small number of individuals.
“The behaviour displayed and the damage caused is wholly unacceptable and I can assure you that we will find those responsible.
“The impact this kind of mindless, indiscriminate and, frankly, shameful behaviour has on communities is something we do not and will not put up with.”
A police spokesman said officers were first called to reports of youths wearing balaclavas and carrying what were thought to be hammers damaging a trolley park at Sainsbury’s in Corporation Road at 9pm on Wednesday.
Further incidents included business and shop windows smashed in and around Victoria Street West and a host of reports of cars being attacked between 11pm on Wednesday and 1am on Thursday.
It culminated with more than 50 windows being smashed at the Fishing Heritage Centre and Alexandra Dock Business Centre.
Ms Roe said: “Officers work hard with people living in Grimsby and continue to do so to make the town a good place to live and work – something they deserve.
“Criminal behaviour like this will not go unpunished.”
She added: “We want people living there to know that it is business as usual in the town centre and you can come in as usual.”
A teenage boy has been held on suspicion of affray.
