More ‘big exciting events’ pledged after Dominoes
THE CHIEF executive of Hull’s culture company is promising “three or four really big, exciting” events a year.
It comes after a barnstorming staging of Dominoes, a domino run using 12,000 breezeblocks, which attracted tens of thousands, including many families with young children, to the city centre.
The first major event commissioned by the company continu- ing Hull’s City of Culture legacy, Absolutely Cultured, it bought back the 2017 buzz as the toppling “dominoes” wove their way down streets and through buildings, conquering spectacular set pieces in Princes Quay shopping centre and city squares before a grand finale in Queens Gardens.
A few people enjoyed it so much that they took breezeblocks home as souvenirs.
Chief executive of Absolutely Cultured Katy Fuller said: “We are up and running again. It is about people recognising a different rhythm – we are looking at three or four really big, exciting things a year – not 25. We want the things we do to have impact.”
Arts Council England awarded the company £1.25m last week so that people can “continue to experience life-changing arts and cultural activities”.
The next major event will be from November 29 to December 2. Using projection and commissioned soundscapes, and drawing inspiration from the city’s links with Scandinavia, artists will explore “shared stories, mythologies and folklore.”
Kerry Kemp, who was at Saturday’s event was typical in her praise. She said: “It was great for Hull and shows what a great place it is.”
