Sufferer’s sister backs 300-mile bike challenge to help cancer charity

-

A HORSFORTH charity shop worker is getting back on her bike to highlight Cycle 300, a new fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK.

Jeanette Boyle, who manages the Cancer Research UK shop on Town Street, is urging people to join her and sign up for the event.

Cycle 300 is a flexible, individual fundraising challenge where participants are asked to cycle 300 miles throughout September.

They will raise money for Cancer Research UK, picking their own routes and setting their own pace.

Ms Boyle, 59, admits she hasn’t cycled for a while but she has been inspired to get her bike from the shed and sign up in celebration of her brother David, who is now able to talk again after treatment for cancer.

Ms Boyle, who lives in East Bierley, near Bradford, said she was cycling for her brother.

She said: “In my 15 years working for Cancer Research UK, I have known so many colleagues and customers who have faced cancer, but it was so hard when it happened to my own brother.

“The doctors then told him he would have to have surgery to remove his voice box, which would mean he would lose his voice.

“Thankfully, after having a speaking valve fitted it is giving him a voice again and he’s getting back to more of a normal life.

“When I heard about Cycle 300, I thought this was a great opportunity to do my bit to celebrate my brother’s new voice.

“I will be thinking of David every pedal I take towards those 300 miles.”
