THE CENTENARY of the Royal Air Force was celebrated with a parade at Yorkshire Air Museum yesterday.
The spectacle was held during the Allied Air Forces memorial day, held each year at the museum near York.
It has become a truly international event in recent years, celebrating the unique relationship and cooperation that Allied Air Forces have established during military conflicts across the years.
The event featured a major parade, led by the Yorkshire Military Marching Band, and included members of various service organisations, current serving personnel and Air Training Corps cadets.
The parade lead to the Drumhead Service in the main display hangar, set against the stunning backdrop of Halifax bomber, “Friday the 13th”. The finale featured of the ‘Sunset’ ceremony and lowering of the RAF ensign and the march past with salute taken by the senior attending dignitaries.
The event grows in size and stature each year and is attended by air force and defence attachés and diplomats from many allied nations, in addition to senior RAF personnel and civic dignitaries.
