CROWNING GLORY

-

Actress Claire Foy smiles in celebration after she was named outstanding lead actress for her role in The Crown drama series. The honour was bestowed at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. She dedicated her award to co-star, former Doctor Who, Matt Smith.

SHE HAD reigned icily over two seasons of The Crown, the monumental TV series about the lives of the current Royal family, but Claire Foy struggled to keep her composure as Hollywood crowned her the queen of TV.

Accepting the Emmy award for best actress in a drama series, Ms Foy, an actress who spent part of her childhood in West Yorkshire and who had been best known previously as an earlier Royal, Anne Boleyn, tearily dedicated her award to her co-star, the former Doctor Who, Matt Smith.

She had been nominated before for the medium’s premier award, and this was her final chance before her role passes to Olivia Colman, who will play an older Queen in the next series. Matthew Rhys was named best actor in a drama series for his role in The Americans, shocking many US fans who realised for the first time he was Welsh, but Smith missed out on the award for best supporting actor, which went to Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones, a show that also won best drama. British writer Charlie Brooker also won with an episode of Black Mirror. Londoner Thandie Newton won the supporting drama actress award for her part in Westworld, and Henry Winkler, veteran of Happy Days, was named best supporting actor in a comedy, for his role as an acting coach in Barry.

The ceremony was briefly interrupted when winning director Glenn Weiss proposed onstage to his girlfriend.

I don’t call you my girlfriend... because I want to call you my wife. Director Glenn Weiss proposes on stage during the Emmys
