Get out and about while helping the community

-

Could you help to connect people and places through community transport? The council is looking for volunteers to join the team.

With a range of opportunities available across North Yorkshire, being a volunteer driver is a great way to get out and about helping local people and you can choose the hours that suit you.

You can use your own car or a Go Local vehicle and expenses will be covered so you will never be out of pocket.

The council is also keen to hear from people who are interested in being passenger assistants or helping out in the office.

Martin Trent is a volunteer driver with Stokesley Community Care. He said: “I drive once a week, generally for two or three hours, it depends how many people we’re helping and whereabouts they live.

“One of the psychological dangers of retirement is that you can feel like you’re not needed, therefore there is an advantage to doing something positive like this.

“You get a sense of belonging and of making yourself useful, which is quite good for morale when you’re 70.

“You’re very actively part of the community and the folk you pick up get to be like friends and family.”

Anyone interested in being a Go Local volunteer can register their interest online at www.golocalnorthyorks.community/get-involved and the nearest community transport provider will be in touch soon.
