Council gifts land to charity for holiday home in memory of ‘bubbly’ Bradley

-

A FORMER Mayor of Scarborough has said he thinks about “inspirational” Bradley Lowery almost daily after the council voted to gift land to a charity set up in memory of the youngster to build a holiday home for families with children with life-threatening conditions.

Coun Martin Smith was speaking after the council’s cabinet decided to grant the long lease of land near Scalby Manor at “nil value” to the Bradley Lowery Foundation.

The charity was set up in memory of six-year-old Bradley, who lost his battle to cancer neuroblastoma in July 2017.

One of the last holidays Bradley and his family had together was in Scarborough and it was during this visit his mother, Gemma, got the idea for a holiday home for children and families facing similar challenges. A two-storey property is planned with five bedrooms and a sensory garden with hot tub, sauna and pool.

Coun Smith, who was the town’s mayor at the time of Bradley’s visit, said: “Bradley was totally inspirational, a young man so ill yet so full of life. Having this place built is a wonderful legacy as he sticks in my memory all the time as he was such a bubbly little gentleman.”

The youngster, a staunch Sunderland Association Football Club fan, caught the media spotlight when he was befriended by the team’s former striker Jermain Defoe.
