Man remanded after soldier hit by car

-

A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court in February after a soldier was hit by a car outside a nightclub, leaving him seriously injured.

A Yorkshire regiment serviceman, named locally as Joshua Adams-Mitchell, was hit by a blue Mercedes-Benz in the early hours of New Year’s Day outside the TBC nightclub in Batley, West Yorkshire, police have said.

Yesterday, West Yorkshire Police said Hamza Ali Hussain, of Middle Road, Westtown, Dewsbury, was charged with wounding with intent.

He appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was remanded to appear at Leeds Crown Court on February 1.

The incident happened at about 4.41am on New Year’s Day on Bradford Road, close to the junction with Hick Lane.

A police spokesman said that the 21-year-old injured man is continuing to recover in hospital.

He suffered injuries including a fractured cheekbone and eye socket and bruising to his face and body.

The spokesman said a 21-yearold and a 27-year-old man who were also arrested as part of the investigation have been released pending investigation.

Kirklees district commander Chief Superintendent Julie Sykes, said: “We have been conducting an extensive and thorough investigation into this incident since it happened on New Year’s Day and, significantly, we have now arrested and charged a man involved in this offence.”

Police said the incident is not believed to be racially motivated and there is no evidence to support the victim was targeted due to his service in the Army.

Police ask anyone with information to come forward and speak to officers.
