PS4 sales pass the 91m mark over Christmas

-

SONY HAS now sold more than 91m PlayStation 4 consoles, helped by a sales boost in the runup to Christmas.

The Japanese firm managed to sell a total of 5.6m units during the 2018 festive season, while more than 50.7m PS4 games were sold over the same period, taking the total number of game sales to 876m globally since its last console launch in November 2013.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, which became the fastest-selling PlayStation first-party game ever, had sold more than 9m copies as at November 25. “This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4,” said John Kodera, president and chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, Sony Interactive Entertainment will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

The company also said that PlayStation Network, the console’s online platform, continues to grow, surpassing 90m monthly active users on the service as at the end of November 2018.

Last year, Sony revealed that it will not attend annual video games convention E3 in 2019 for the first time in the show’s 24-year history. E3 is one of the biggest dates in the video game industry calendar and is traditionally the venue used to announce new gaming content and console hardware.
