But to many, he is best known for an appearance on the 1971 Morecambe And Wise Christmas Special that remains one of the most popular moments of British TV comedy history.
The Oscar-winning composer, once married to Mia Farrow, worked on films such as Porgy And Bess, My Fair Lady and Gigi.
He later turned to conducting orchestras and was principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) from 1968 to 1979, appearing with them in the programme Andre Previn’s Music Night.

LSO chairman Gareth Davies yesterday said: “Andre was one of a kind and a real friend to the LSO. We will all miss him.” After stepping down as principal conductor, Previn became conductor laureate in 1992 and conductor emeritus in 2016. Andrew Marriner, the orchestra’s principal clarinet, said: “Andre’s musicmaking thrilled me long before I was lucky enough to play with him; but when I did, it was the extraordinary sound he conjured from an orchestra, unmistakably his own, that dazzled.” An accomplished jazz pianist, Previn won 10 Grammys and received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2010.
