Kane on target and Tottenham cruise through in Dortmund
HARRY KANE rewrote his club’s record books as Tottenham Hotspur finished off Borussia Dortmund to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
The England striker’s secondhalf goal saw him become Spurs’ leading scorer in European competitions with 24, helping his side win away to the Bundesliga leaders and seal a 4-0 aggregate success in the last-16 tie.
Kane’s 14th goal in 17 Champions League appearances again proved he is the man for the occasion.
Spurs went into the game with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg, but they were forced to survive a first-half barrage at Signal Iduna Park before Kane’s goal early after the restart took the pressure off
and ensured a safe passage to the last eight.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side went out to Juventus at this stage last season.
It means they are in their first Champions League quarter-final since Harry Redknapp took them there in 2011.
Holders Real Madrid crashed out as Ajax produced a stunning 4-1 victory in the Santiago Bernabeu to reach the quarter-finals.
Los Blancos, with captain Sergio Ramos suspended after deliberately collecting a yellow card in the first leg, had been looking to build on a slender 2-1 lead from that game in Amsterdam and stay on course for a potential fourth straight European triumph.
However, Ajax raced into an early lead through Hakim Ziyech before Dusan Tadic set up David Neres for a second in the 18th minute.
Tadic swept in a brilliant third goal just after the hour – which was eventually given following an extensive Video Assistant Referee review.
Substitute Marco Asensio briefly gave Real brief hope, but Lasse Schone’s free-kick quickly put paid to that.
