York MP leads the anti-Brexit campaign in rally
A YORK MP is urging women to make their voices heard in the Brexit debate by taking part in a second referendum campaign event today.
Pro-EU Labour MP Rachael Maskell will speak at a rally in St Helen’s Square, in York, organised by the People’s Vote campaign group.
Speaking ahead of the event, she told The Yorkshire Post the march – which comes on the back of International Women’s Day – will focus on amplifying female voices on Brexit ahead of next week’s meaningful vote in the Commons.
She said: “We have got this crucial vote on the future of this country and the catastrophic path that we are going down, which is going to really decimate jobs, our economy, opportunity.
“I am really deeply concerned about where we have ended up on this, on where the debate has ended up but also on where we are heading.
“The Prime Minister’s deal is so substandard that I have got serious concerns about the future of our country. I say to all women, just come out, join us and have your voice heard.”
This comes as pro-EU campaigners from across Yorkshire take to the road to urge MPs to ditch the Government’s Brexit plans.
Supporters from six pro EU groups are rolling out Yorkshire for Europe’s ‘Stop Brexit’ bus to embark on a tour of key constituencies in the region.
Six MPs will be presented with a basket of fruit from Continental countries, donated by Wetherbybased Goosemoor Organics.
A spokesperson for the group, Louise Houghton, said: “We now know that the Brexit we were promised cannot be delivered and if we proceed with Theresa May’s plans, we would do untold damage to our region and the country.
“It’s time we let the people decide if we really want this, or whether, knowing what we know now, we’d rather simply remain.”
