Wedding venue and council object to hotel plan
MANAGERS OF a wedding venue and hotel are among objectors to proposals for a new 70-bedroom hotel in Yorkshire.
Cottingham Parks Development Ltd is seeking outline planning permission for the hotel at Cottingham Parks Golf and Leisure Club in Cottingham.
The application comes a year after plans for the hotel, which was to be funded by also building 152 homes, were refused as a “significant and unacceptable” intrusion on the open countryside.
The developers have stressed that the hotel is needed to diversify the business as golf is predicted to go into a slow decline during the next 10 years as popularity of the sport continues to wane.
The proposals for the site on Wood Hill Way include extending the existing clubhouse and leisure facilities and increasing the number of car parking spaces from 200 to 384.
The applicant has argued that the size of the hotel is similar to Cave Castle, in nearby Brough, which has a 71-bedroom hotel and golf and leisure facilities.
East Riding Council’s planning officers are recommending the application for approval, saying that locating the hotel behind the clubhouse and removing the housing “reduces its impact on the setting and character of the village to an acceptable level”.
However, managers at the nearby Lazaat Hotel are objecting to the proposed scheme, claiming the golf element may be less viable in the future is “inadequate justification for a substantial speculative development”.
Hull Council has also an objection against the plans, saying town centre sites have to be considered first ahead of the land earmarked for the development.
However parish councillors in both Cottingham and Skidby have voiced their support the plans, which are due to be discussed by East Riding Council on January 9.
