Misery of floodings goes on in the wake of 70mph Storm Brendan

-

STORM BRENDAN continued to disrupt livelihoods yesterday after major flooding in the UK.

Pictures showed cars and a construction site submerged near Ufton Nervet, six miles from Reading.

It comes after the Environment Agency issued flood warnings and alerts across the UK, with coastal areas particularly affected, with trees brought down in 70mph winds and ferry sailings cancelled. In Christchurch, Dorset, high tides flooded car parks by the quay earlier this week, with the same happening in nearby Mudeford.

Local resident Steve Hogen, who filmed the flooding in the early hours of Wednesday, said he was concerned.

He said: “I’ve lived in Mudeford for 11 years and think the flooding is getting more often and worse.”

Inland, the River Avon burst its bank in places on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, sunshine and scattered showers are expected in Yorkshire today.

The showers will sometimes be heavy, most likely across the Pennines, and with a chance of hail and thunder, according to the agency.

And it said the region would be “feeling noticeably cooler compared to Thursday,” with a maximum temperature likely to climb no higher than 8C. The outlook forecasted yesterday was that it would mainly be dry tomorrow with sunny spells along the coast.

It is expected to be largely sunny on Sunday and dry on Monday but with increasing cloud.

“Frosty nights and rather cold daytimes” are predicted by the Environment Agency.
