-

A PLAY based on first-hand experiences of bullying is to be performed at the University of Bradford as part of its commitment to raising awareness of mental health issues.

Devised by members of the city’s Girlington Unity Girls group, Beat the Bully, Be a Buddy is being staged to show how art, drama and music can help those who are struggling emotionally.

Jen Nevin, a health and wellbeing co-ordinator at Girlington Community Centre, said: “Here, we understand both the importance of having a safe environment to express yourself and that access the arts is vital to health, well-being and community cohesion.

“We also want to offer a welcoming space for those who might not currently feel the arts are for them, to try new skills and use the power of theatre to feel connected and empowered.

“The Unity Girls are 14 young people aged between 12 and 25 and through the making of this production they have been able to express their own experiences of bullying and mental health.

“They have also learned valuable skills – their passion and dedication to get people talking about real issues is infectious.

“It has had a considerable impact on the young women’s wellbeing and has opened doors for them whether they choose to work in the arts or elsewhere. It has also inspired the people of Girlington to see what’s possible when people work together.”

The play has been brought to the university by vice-chancellor Professor Shirley Congdon after she saw an earlier performance.

“This is a very powerful production and we are encouraging people to attend and support this group of brave and talented young girls,” she said.

“We are committed to raising awareness around the issue of mental health and the detrimental effect that bullying can have on a person.”

The performance in the university’s Great Hall will start at 6.30pm on Wednesday, and will include a post-show discussion on bullying.

Tickets are free, but must be booked in advance.
