-

GAVIN & Stacey was one of the major winners at an annual television awards last night.

The sitcom was judged best entertainment programme at the 51st Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House.

Fiona Bruce (best news presenter), Killing Eve (best drama), Ant and Dec (best television personality) and Blue Planet Live (best factual programme) were among the other winners.

The awards, which honour industry names from across the entertainment world in a variety of genres, also saw EastEnders actress Kellie Bright named soap actor of the year.

She said: “It’s a strange thing getting an award for doing the thing that you love.

“I’m very honoured not just for me but for the show.

“What I do is literally the icing on the cake – without all of the people making the cake, the cake wouldn’t exist. So it means a lot.”

However, EastEnders’ big rival Coronation Street won Soap of the Year

ITV’s flagship breakfast show Good Morning Britain was nominated in the daytime programme category, but lost out to This Morning.

The event was hosted by Lorraine Kelly, with profits given to this year’s chosen charities, Help for Heroes and Combat Stress.

Strictly Come Dancing took home the award for the reality programme of the year, while

BBC’s Newsnight received this year’s Special Award.

The annual awards show, first held in 1969, celebrates achievements across the fields of TV and radio.

Line Of Duty was named best crime programme and Greg James won the radio personality award.

Gavin & Stacey was broadcast from 2007 to 2010, a total of 20 episodes across three series shown on BBC Three and then on BBC One.
