A small fortune... JK Rowling book could sell for £150,000

-

IT MAY only be a little over an inch-and-a-half high, but it certainly commands a big asking price.

A miniature Harry Potter book which was handwritten by JK Rowling is set to be auctioned with a guide price of between £100,000 and £150,000.

The 31-page book was written by the author in 2004 and features extracts of the welcome letter sent to the young wizard by the Hogwarts school of wizardry that appears at the beginning of the first book, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone.

Pages of the book feature lines such as “students may also bring an owl or a cat or a toad” and “parents are reminded that first years are not allowed their own broomsticks”.

The book is about an inchand-a-half tall and two-anda-quarter inches wide and is being auctioned online by Just Collecting.

Dan Wade, the company’s head of collectables, said: “We’ve watched the market for the rarest Harry Potter books soar tenfold over the past decade or so, as childhood fans of the series have grown up to become serious collectors.

“I think every Harry Potter fan in the world would love to own this book, so we’re expecting a lot of interest – and maybe even a couple of bids via Owl Post.”

The literary saga centred on Harry Potter is the best-selling series of books in history, having sold more than 500m copies worldwide.

The first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has sold in excess of 120m copies, making it one of the best-selling books of all time.

The auction in which the tiny handwritten book is due to be sold ends on Thursday.

Other items being sold by Just Collecting include a pocket watch belonging to East End gangster Reggie Kray, a high school photo of actress Marilyn Monroe and a hat worn at a concert by Madonna in 2006.
