A wedding that marked a new chapter for the Royal Family

-

IT WAS on a gloriously sunny day, just short of two years ago, that Harry and Meghan married at a star-studded ceremony in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Thousands of well wishers lined the streets of Windsor and millions tuned in world-wide to watch the Queen’s grandson marry the American actress.

Inside, royalty from around the world rubbed shoulders with Hollywood A-listers and sports stars.

After weeks of controversial headlines around her father, it was Prince Charles who walked the smiling Meghan down the aisle to meet an emotional-looking Prince.

At the altar, Prince Harry told her: “You look amazing.”

British designer Clare Waight Keller created the Duchess’s white boat-neck dress for French fashion house Givenchy.

The Queen loaned her a striking diamond bandeau tiara and a trailing five-metre silk veil embroidered with the flowers of each country in the Commonwealth completed the look.

Among the guests at the wedding included Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John, who later performed at the wedding reception.

The Duke of Cambridge was best man, while Prince George and Princess Charlotte were among the 10 bridesmaids and page boys. In her vows, Ms Markle did not promise to “obey” her husband, while the prince broke with royal tradition by choosing to wear a wedding ring.

The service combined tradition with modernity and the bride’s African-American heritage. Bishop Michael Curry, the president of the US Episcopal Church, gave a memorable address, while the Rt Rev David Conner, Dean of Windsor, conducted the service and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, officiated.
