Newsreader wants public to stick to rules after pneumonia battle
HUW EDWARDS has warned people to follow the guidelines for slowing the spread of Covid-19 as he revealed he has been in hospital with pneumonia.
The newsreader, 58, expressed gratitude for the care he received and said he will return to BBC News At Ten this week.
And he was full of praise for the National Health Service.
He wrote on Twitter: “Big thanks to @KingsCollegeNHS for superb care #pneumonia.
“I’ll be back at @BBCNews this week – keep safe everyone and follow the guidelines #StayHomeSaveLives.”
King’s College is one of the UK’s largest NHS Foundation Trusts and has five sites in south-east London and Kent.
Edwards’ message comes after the Queen delivered a message of hope to the nation in the midst of
the coronavirus epidemic, saying “we will overcome it” although we “may have more still to endure”.
His message attracted thousands of likes from well-wishers, as well as comments from fans, who were glad to see he had recovered.
New York Times author and historian Professor Kate Williams wrote: “Oh no, you had this, so sorry and very glad to hear you’re feeling better!”
Sky News’s Royal commentator Alastair Bruce said: “Huw, really good news that you have conquered this vile pestilence and our thanks to those that fought with you. #NHSHeroes”.
Meanwhile Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd is in hospital suffering from Covid-19.
The Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, aged 70, is being cared for at Manchester Royal Infirmary, his family said.
A statement from Mr Lloyd’s family said: “He is stable and responding to the treatment and dedicated care that he is receiving from the brilliant doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff at the hospital.”
Mr Lloyd has been the Labour MP for Rochdale since 2017 after serving as MP for Stretford between 1983 and 2012.
