BEHIND THE CAMERA:
Yorkshire Post photographer Bruce Rollinson
In a weekly series of picture specials, we celebrate the work of Yorkshire photographers – this week we feature Bruce Rollinson of The Yorkshire Post.
BRUCE ROLLINSON was all set to become an engineer when his passion for photography took his career in a different direction.
He took an engineering degree and was working as an electronic engineer at the IBA, the Independent Broadcasting Authority based in Hampshire.
But when he received a tax rebate he used the money to buy a good camera and his hobby of sports photography turned into a full-time job, eventually joining The Yorkshire Post in 1985.
“I’ve always enjoyed sports photography of all kinds,” said Bruce, 61, whose first work appeared in the Pudsey News.
“I began offering a few sports photographs and they asked me to do more news pictures and it just took off from there and it led to working full-time in newspapers.”
He loves covering all sports but has a soft spot for cycling and is a competitive rider himself, having being named the top over-60 in mountain biking and cross-country cycling in the country.
Bruce, who lives in Bingley, said he still loves taking pictures as much now as when he first started out.
Among his strongest memories are of taking photographs in New York in the days after the 9-11 attacks and of charity visits to Romanian orphanages with The Yorkshire Post shoebox appeal. He said: “I enjoy the work with the team at The Yorkshire Post and I still enjoy taking pictures, especially sports pictures.”
