Let us have a true lockdown to protect us

-

From: Barry Foster, High Stakesby, Whitby.

ONLY A matter of months ago we were feeling the country was on the up; Boris was elected and we thought here at last was a Prime Minister who would do what he promised. This was all curtailed by the coronavirus.

On Sunday, he gave a very confusing speech and one which does not offer much support to all of us who have kept the lockdown.

I live in the beautiful town of Whitby. In normal circumstances it would be blessed with tourists. The townsfolk have mainly kept to the lockdown and I am proud of living with the people who have kept to this. But Boris seems to give licence to those who have already ignored the lockdown to travel to places like Whitby.

During the past week, caravans, people who own holiday homes and those spilling onto the beach have still been coming to the town even though shops and toilets are closed. Please Boris, get back to a true lockdown and protect us all.

WHAT A splendid article by David Blunkett (The Yorkshire Post, May 9), making the valid point that “Parliament has been marginalised over Covid-19”.

His view was confirmed in the garbled TV broadcast by the Prime Minister on Sunday, in which he set out such vague guidelines. Surely he should have had his “plans” approved by Parliament before opening his mouth in public? How sad there has been no agreement between the four nations which make up the United Kingdom. I do not often agree with the First Minster of Scotland, but in this situation I do. Caution should continue to be at the heart of any policy in response to this awful pandemic.

CAN ANYONE help me with the thinking of the Labour Party and that of the heads of devolved Governments?

For several weeks they have been baying for Boris Johnson to treat people like adults and indicate how the path to getting out of lockdown might look. Yet when he introduces a plan that requires some decisions for the population to make to keep themselves safe, they tell him that it’s too soon to think of anything new. Political point scoring has no place in this deadly pandemic.
