Like many before, Johnson has become deaf to the public

-

From: Peter Rickaby, Selby. ONCE in power, Boris Johnson, like many predecessors, has become deaf to public opinion (Tom Richmond, The Yorkshire Post, May 29).

An air of arrogance is beginning to pervade Government, highighted by the Dominic Cummings saga.

Patronising the electorate, ignoring their feelings, is a recipe for future disasters.

Mr Johnson should remember that many are blessed with long memories.

From: Dr John D Rayner, North Ferriby. WHAT the supremely arrogant Dominic Cummings did was, at the very least, stretch the principles of lockdown.

He could perhaps have redeemed himself by showing some contrition but the Prime Minister’s support in the face of his refusal to apologise calls both men’s judgement into question.

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield. APART from the trip to Durham by Dominic Cummings, the real wrong is the damage he has done to his party and the difficulty the police will now have of enforcing any rules on travel.

The stock answer from me, if stopped, would be: “If Cummings can do it without penalty, why can’t I?”

Further, what about the fines already doled out by over-vigilant officers? Are they to be repaid?

From: Cecil Crinnion, Sycamore Close, Slingsby, York. I HAVE yet to hear any expression of sympathy for the unfortunate situation Dominic Cummings and his wife found themselves in while ill and coping with a young child.

The press, BBC, social media and Durham Police should all be ashamed of the disgraceful way they have presented the story.

From: Ralph Lennard, Leeds. TO be honest I’m not interested on the pros and cons of the Cummings affair. What has really frustrated and annoyed me is the cameramen outside his house, squashed together to take pictures. Absolutely no social distancing. A total nonsense.

From: Ian Traynor, Osbaldwick Lane, Leeds. I WAS appalled to read Paul Brown (The Yorkshire Post, May 27) suggesting bars and cafes exclude the over-40s.

What arrogance! Approaching 75, I have had an active social life and one of the main regrets I’ve had about lockdown is not being able to meet friends for lunch and a chat.
