Norwood has fingers crossed for Old Trafford
OLIVER NORWOOD would be “pretty gutted” if safety concerns denied him a first Old Trafford appearance, but at least it should not be his last chance.
The Sheffield United midfielder came through Manchester United’s academy without playing for the first team. In eight years since he left, he has never been into the away dressing room and whether he will play there this season is still unknown.
With the Premier League due to restart on June 17, the Blades should meet the Red Devils behind closed doors this month, but some games will be played at neutral venues to minimise the chances of fans congregating outside. While it is being considered, no decision has yet been reached.
At least Sheffield United’s stay in the Premier League is not going to be the one-season affair many predicted at the start. Instead, the game could have a big bearing on deciding European qualification.
“I’d be pretty gutted, really, if the game was moved but if the police and the Government feel it’s not safe then we’re guided by that,” said Norwood.
“But we’re both going to be in the Premier League next season so, hopefully, we will get that opportunity then.
“It was where I learnt my football education and it would have been a fantastic occasion but if it’s not to be, it’s not to be.”
There is hope for Norwood after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed no decision had been taken.
“We have identified three games in our force area that present factors which need further consideration, and GMP is working with both clubs (Manchester United and City) and the relevant safety advisory groups to assess if we can safely facilitate playing these matches at their intended locations,” they said. “A decision will be made by the SAGs in due course and we will support whichever outcome is decided.”
Manchester United away is due to be the Blades’ third postresumption league game and by then they could be above the Red Devils.
Two points and two places behind in seventh, Chris Wilder’s team start with a game in hand at Aston Villa on June 17, then are at Newcastle United on the weekend, when Manchester United visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The sides drew 3-3 at Bramall Lane in November.
