Man City back in business with win

-

PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester City got their campaign back up and running again by sweeping past 10-man Arsenal, 3-0, at an empty Etihad Stadium.

City could count themselves fortunate that Eric Garcia was not booked for hauling down Eddie Nketiah - a let-off that appeared to jolt them into life, with Bernd Leno at his best to keep the hosts at bay.

Raheem Sterling cut in from the left and forced a fine stop from the Arsenal goalkeeper, before producing an even better save by getting down to his left to thwart David Silva.

Leno soon spread himself when Riyad Mahrez was put through by the excellent Kevin De Bruyne, who soon found Sterling only for the City forward to lift the ball over goalframe as well as goalkeeper.

But just as the half looked set to end goalless, Sterling seized on Arsenal substitute Luiz’s inability to deal with a De Bruyne pass and lashed home from close range before wheeling off and celebrating with his teammates.

The Brazil international’s evening would go from bad to worse four minutes into the second half.

Mahrez’s pace unsettled Luiz and the defender’s attempt to slow the winger led to a foul, with referee Anthony Taylor pointing to the spot and brandishing a red card.

The video assistant referee cleared the decision and De Bruyne coolly beat Leno.

Manchester City suffered a serious injury in the final 10 minutes as goalkeeper Ederson crashed into his team-mate Garcia, leading to the defender receiving lengthy treatment before leaving the field.

Guardiola’s side made it 3-0 as Phil Foden tapped in after Aguero’s effort came back off the post.
